Croydon 18 July
It proved to be perfect conditions for Eastbourne athletes as they travelled to Croydon for the last of the seasons Young athletes league matches. The high jump event was where Eastbourne really made their mark. Joel Harvey cleared a fantastic 1m80 in the U15 boys age group which gave him a grade one standard and puts him in the top ten in the country. Usually seen running the 200m he may have to now change events! Another sprinter to put on his jumping spikes was Harry Clarke and he matched Joel’s performance of 1m80 for another fine win , a personal best and grade 2 standard in the U17 boys age group. Not to be outdone by the boys Katie Lambert gradually found her spring to clear the bar at 1m63 to keep up her consistent good form this season. Katie is also one of the top high jumpers in the country for her age achieving first place and another grade one standard. Isaac Francis used a pole to help him achieve a personal best height clearing 2m80 in the U15 Pole vault for an easy win and thrilled to gain a grade 2 standard. He followed this with another win in the hammer with 34m.86 and second in the shot putt with 10m18 – both grade 4 standards.
Jono Ketley has wanted to leap over 6m in the long jump and did this in style with 6m13 to win the U17 event. On the track the distance runners were suffering in the heat but Ed Dodd showed his class leading from the front in his U17 1500m to clock 4m22.36. Young Daniel Stidder at only 11 years old also tackled the 1500m and knocked a massive 9 seconds off his previous best to clock 5m12.8 and clinch 2nd place. Both these 1500m times earned them grade 4 standards. While in the U15 age group Jonathon White moved up from 400m to gain a decisive win in his 1500m with 4m35.99 secs. Another young athlete Charlotte Tester has been working hard in training and it paid off as she improved in all her U13 events. The best performance was in the high jump with 1m20 ( Grade 4 ) and she placed 3rd in the shot putt with 5m38 and ran the 75m in 12.3 secs. In the U17 400m Keith Algar achieved a personal best of 54.89 to show the opposition a clean pair of heels. It was Ben Attfield’s turn in the U15 age group not quite dipping under 60 secs and he was supported by Jacob Hansen who won the ‘B’ string in 69.75 secs. In the U15 boys short sprints Eastbourne gained maximum points. Joel and Jordan Surridge dominated the 200m and Jordan linked up with newcomer Matt Harrison in the 100m. The other teams did not stand a chance when these three joined JonWhite to make up the 4x100m relay winning in 47.24 secs. The female sprinters in the team were Rachel Noel, Joanna Szczesnowicz, Karley Pierr and Lucy Zecchin and they also gained valuable points throughout the day. The meeting ended as usual with the 4x400m relay which as ever was very exciting. The lead kept changing but Eastbourne were triumphant by the third lap allowing Jono to stride round easily. Most of these athletes will be in action again at the club championships on Sunday 8th August 2010.
