“Rovers hold league form” Jan 2011
Eastbourne Rovers Athletics Club have taken part in two cross country fixture in quick succession over the last two weeks This was in the fourth and fifth East Sussex Sunday Cross Country league fixtures with Seaford Striders in Ashdown Forest and Abbotts Wood respectfully. Both courses proved challenges on deciding the best footwear as the varying conditions and terrain made the choice difficult. It has been good to see people like Stuart Pelling getting in some solid winter training and Matt Southam succumbing to team pressure and has turned in a couple of solid performances. Whereas in the last race Ed Dodd was the star of the show. In this six race series the overall team has scored solidly throughout the field in the five mile events and again finished fourth place to maintain their position in the ten team challenge. In the junior Dylan Halpin has turned out every time and has been rewarded with improvement and in the last race claimed the fourth place. Rebekan Coomber has been another one of those always there in the various conditions for character building performances and moved up to eight. The road running season kicks off with the Chichester 10K this weekend. With next month’s Eastbourne Half Marathon also proving to be a big attraction.
“Jake and ERAC Team win” Eastbourne Rovers Athletics Club took part in the third of the Sussex Cross Country league fixtures last Saturday. The event took part on the Bexhill Down area which is always considered to be a testing course along with great viewing for spectators. The younger age groups took part first building right through to the seniors with men and women having separate races. Daniel Stidder 7th and Dylan Halpin 27th set proceeding on the way in the U13 event. Jake Alger (14.52) was the star of the show as he won the U15 boys race and helped his ‘team mates’ win the overall team prize. Ieuan Handley (15.32) was 7th along with Tim Stace, Johnnie White and Luke McWilton packing the next three places in times of 15.47, 15.54, 15.55 in a really close battle between them. They now lead the Sussex league Team event and are strong favourites going into the last match next month. The U17 lacked the numbers they wanted but with Ed Dodd 4th getting the better of Keith Alger 6th on this occasion remain in third place for their overall team series. The senior women and senior men again lacked numbers but remain in sixth and fifth respectfully. This weekend see a return to the Sunday Cross Country League on Ashdown Forest. The road running season does not kick off until next month with the Chichester 10K on Sunday 6th February
Rovers off the mark in 2011 Eastbourne Rovers Athletics Club jointly took part in the third East Sussex Sunday Cross Country league fixture with Seaford Striders on a very tough and testing course at Pett near Hastings at the weekend. It was a good chance for many to start to run off some of the over indulgence from Christmas and the New Year. The overall team scored solidly throughout the field in the five mile event to finish in fourth place to maintain their position in the ten team challenge. In the junior race which was staged just before saw Dylan Halpin finish a solid 6th For many attentions this weekend turn to the Sussex Cross Country Championships being staged in Stammer Park at Falmer. Next weekend it is the turn of the third match in the Sussex Cross Country League programme being staged at Bexhill. Before this Thursday evening sees the start of the Horsham indoor sprints and hurdles grand prix events as various 2011 events really start to take place. The road running season does not kick off until next month.
ERAC and no rising of the Phoenix
Eastbourne Rovers Athletics Club took part in their second Sussex Cross Country at the weekend as the weather turned. The event this time was staged at the relatively flat but heavy going Plumpton course with some competitors struggling more to get to the course than round it.
First up was Daniel Stidder in the U13 race as he lead the team home in 7th place in a highly competitive race. The season’s unbeaten U15 team were next on show with three finishers in the top ten. After beating great rival’s phoenix by the smallest of margins in the last match this time there was ‘no rising of the phoenix’ as Horsham clearly had brought along the best team to challenge. It was very close over the two lap course with Jake Alger back to his strong running with a great 3rd place finish in 16.59. The team are having their own club battle and on this occasion the next finishing order was Luke McWilton, Johnnie White, Ieuan Handley and Timmy Stace. It was only when the results were confirmed that they had lost out to Horsham by just one point. However the lead the race series by five points overall.
The U17 are also having their own battle and on this occasion it was the older Alger brother Keith who lead them home in eighth place. Close on his heels was Joe Russell for ninth while team player Ed Dodd is racing his way gradually back to form for thirteenth. The result secures them in second place for the overall U17 team placings.
On this occasion the seniors were not to be out done with both the Men and Women scoring well and finishing a very creditable fourth in their leagues. The Women’s team comprised of all Masters which is a great credit to them. The photo shows the start of the women’s race.

Eastbourne Rovers Athletics Club took part in the established Phoenix Preston Park Races last Sunday. The U15 team continued to show the same form they have been in the cross country races with another great victory against the home club. Leading the team home was Jonny White in 2nd place ahead of Luke McWilton 4th, who was running for the first time again after his plaster cast removed. He was closely followed by Jake Alger 5th and Leuan Handley 8th to make up the team. In the U11 girls Rhiannon Handley finished a fine 24th in 9.59. The U17 boys also did well but this time the home club Phoenix were too strong but their second place was a good result. The team were lead home by Joe Russell in 5th place with Keith Alger, Peter Osborn and Ed Dodd filling 6th to 8th. Attention turns to the Brighton 10K this weekend before back to the Sussex XC league on the 27th. (pictured left Jonny White, pictured right Luke McWilton complete with plaster cast.)
East Sussex Cross Country League
Nov 2010 “Chris the Birthday Boy wins XC” Eastbourne Rovers Athletic Club took part in the second East Sussex Sunday Cross Country league fixture of the six race series at Warren Hill this week. The team which comprises runners from Eastbourne Rovers & Seaford Striders completed the 8km course set up at Warren Hill. Chris Dodd celebrated his birthday with a fine win. After sharing the lead with Hastings’s Ross Skelton he ‘kicked’ at the right moment to pull away as needed. The team’s biggest improver from the first fixture three week ago was Stuart Pelling who improved up to 21st place. Lets not forget Emily Jones who’s pace judgement is improving each time out. This course which is a little shorter than the Whitbread Hollow one is for most people about two minutes quicker. Emily showed an improvement of over three minutes. As before in the junior race athletes competed over the shorter distance of about 2Km and the team’s numbers were good with Craig Tester finishing a great third in the Junior 3 lap race and Daniel Carr winning the Junior 4 laps event.

“Rovers into the Sussex XC League”
Eastbourne Rovers Athletics Club’s began their Sussex Cross County League season at the Goodwood venue last Saturday. The league that caters for all age groups from U13 through to senior is staged over four venues during the winter season.
The stars of the show were the U15 boys as they won the overall team prize and ERAC had all of their five runners in the first 13th places. Coach Andy Payne was very pleased that yet again the group will form a big part when the Sussex representative team are chosen in the near future.
First up for the day was U13 Daniel Stidder who had a very close race with his Brighton and Phoenix rivals. Over the 3Km course he ran solidly to hold off Archie Davis of Phoenix for a great 3rd place in 11.30. ERAC’s U15 team were next up but so was the black clouds above as the weather let loose on them during their 4.5Km race. They say cross country can be character building and this was one occasion you could say that as Jake Alger 6th , Jonnie White 8th, Luke McWilton 11th and Timmy Stace 13th raced home for that sought after team prize. A real team effort but great credit to Luke for he was running with a plaster weight on his arm which has to effect your running style for one. The team’s winning points score was 25 just one point ahead of Phoenix but first victory of their winter season. Luckily the weather changed for the U17 which was staged over a 5Km course and Peter Osborn 8th, Keith Alger 9th and Ed Dodd 19th had a great battle before Ed’s ‘wheels came off’ with an injury that dropped him several places but completed the team scoring a fine 2nd place overall behind Brighton but ahead of Phoenix. For the first time in a while ERAC also had scoring teams in the Senior Women’s and Men’s races.
