WOMENS' LEAGUE Calling all U15 and U17 girls! Everyone can join our team. This league is designed to give you the opportunity of going out as part of a team to enjoy a day's athletics. We enter two sets of girls in an 'A' team and 'B' team. these score valuable points and give you the opportunity to do your favourite event and possible try a few new ones. We also have special guest races, these are commonly called 'non-scoring'. They are designed to encourage everyone to have a go at the 100m sprint, long jump and relay, as they are normally the three most popular events. Saturday 28th April 2007
New Division - New Victory for Southern Women
Eastbourne Rovers have spent the week celebrating their victory at the opening match of the Southern Women’s league. Promotion to Division 2 means tougher competition but our girls rose to the challenge and are 2nd in the overall league table of 16 Clubs spread across the South of England. The days track events got of to a dynamic start with Georgia Ungoed and Sophie Rodger both winning their u15’s 100m sprints. Becky Woods U17’s ran a well time Senior Women’s 1500m initially going out in front setting the pace. Becky then fell back for a while and waited for the appropriate moment to steam out in front for her win and new PB of 5.25.1min. The Junior girls also gave show stopping middle distances performances. Jade Rose making her debut as an u15 stormed round the 800m way out in front to win in 2.35.3min. Sophie Hunnisett is still only an u13 but revelled in the challenge of competing up an age group and narrowly missed winning her 1500m when only just over taken on the line with 5.25.7min. The team earned the most points out on the field. Erica Francis now an u20’s won both the Senior Womens Discus 29m dead and Putt the Shot 10.39m. Eric came 2nd in the Hammer with 32.76m. Lucie Robichaud not only moved up from u15’s to u17’s but proved she is ready for Senior competition winning all three of her throws. Firstly hurling the Hammer 30.71m then Putting the Shot 8.40m and throwing the Discus 25.06m. Young Vicky Platt also handled moving up an age group with extreme confidence putting the new weight Shot 8.27m for 2nd place in the A string. Sarah Moore and Hannah Ingram won both strings of the Senior High Jump and Sarah went on to win the Javelin with a whopping throw of 29.02m. Hannah gave fine performances in the sprints especially as she has also moved up from u15’s to Seniors and was only just beaten by an u20 sprinter from South London. Ellie Lambert and Laura Davies proved they are set for a good season when they both cleared 1.40m to claim 2nd place or both the junior A and B string High Jump. Saving the best until last is the perfect expression for the Rovers Junior relay team who lived up to their record breaking reputation. Natalie Herbert, Georgia Ungoed, Sophie Rodger and Joanna Morgan enjoyed the most victorious win running the 4x100 in a mere 51.6sec.
After the first round Rovers find themselves already sitting in a promotion spot. Providing they can raise a full team for the other 4 matches promotion to Division 1 could well be within their reach. Eastbourne 162 , South London Harriers 157 , Basingstoke and Mid Hants 127.5 and Victoria Park and Tower Hamlets 62.5 2nd September 2006
Eastbourne Ladies win Promotion Eastbourne 167.5, Cambridge 148, Tonbridge 147.5 and East Grinstead 77
Eastbourne have always been in Division 3 and only once before did they win but that was the year the league was re shuffled and Eastbourne found they remained back in Division 3. This time there is no doubt that in 2007 the girls will enjoy the new level of competition in Division 2. The day got of to a brilliant start with Sarah Moore and Becky Wood entering their first ever Pole Vault competition. Sarah cleared 1m70 for an A string win and Becky 1m60 for a B string 2nd. Lucy Lintott fancied Long Jumping to round of the season and what a good choice, leaping 4.70m for 2nd place in the A string. Then came the wind and the rain and few could improve on previous performance but the adverse weather could not damper the team spirit. It was great to see Angela Morgan back competing after her knee injury scoring many valuable points for throwing the Hammer, putting the Shot and tossing the Discus. Angela was joined by Liz Brandon in the Hammer and Vicky McNamara for the Shot who did achieve one of the few PBs of the day with her new distance of 8m67. Out on the track Annie Murray ran her second 3000m of the season and managed to shave nearly a second of her previous time to 12.40.1min. Annie then bravely ran the 1500m in 6.05.7min. Other than these ladies the team was made up of Eastbourne’s young talented athletes who certainly did the business to bring in the points. Despite the appalling weather Hannah Ingram won her 100m with a PB of 13.0sec dead. The Club certainly deserve their promotion and have been supported by a dedicated team of coaches. Sue Keen was County Coach for many years, but decided to concentrate on just the Eastbourne athletes and has looked after the Sprints and Hurdles with assistance from Eddie Dennis. David Trunkfield has been available to assist with High Jump and has been encouraging many to try the event. David Robichaud has been coaching throws two nights a week on top of attending training sessions at Horsham to advance his knowledge. Neil Maxwell has looked after the middle distance group and encouraged all the girls to run on the track before preparing for the next Cross Country season. Paul Beeseley has been an absolute star, founder of the Pole Vault club which has proved to be very popular with Eastbourne’s budding athletes. Winning the league may have been a dream at the beginning of the season but Eastbourne’s ladies know if you work hard together as a team dreams can come true.
