Graeme
Strikes Gold
Eastbourne Rovers AC
veteran sprinter Graeme Hogg continued
his fine summer form at the weekend with
a win at the Scottish Masters
Championships. Graeme, lining up in the
100m against last year’s winner, Nigel
Thompson, squeezed to victory in his
weaker sprint event by 0.01sec in
11.68seconds but had to withdraw from
the 200m due to a slight hamstring
injury.
Graeme said “I was a
really unexpected win but great because
my family were there to watch. I pulled
out of the 200m as a precaution as I
felt a slight twinge near the end of the
race. I’ve have been having treatment
on my hamstring all week from Luke at
Sportwise (at the University of
Brighton) and wasn’t sure I was going to
be able compete at all and as the
British Masters are in a couple of weeks
I listened to my coach’s advice and
withdrew.”
Graeme hopes to run well
at the British Championships and then go
on to the World Masters Championships in
Italy at the beginning of September.

Graham at the Double
Eastbourne Rovers athlete Graeme Hogg
celebrated a double success at Sunday’s Sussex Masters’
Athletics Championships at Brighton’s Withdean Stadium.
Competing in the Over 40’s (M40) age group for the first
time Graeme won the 100m in 11.5 seconds, setting a new
Championship Best Performance (CBP). Later in the day in
his favoured event, the 200m, Graeme beat the rest of the
field by over 10metres winning in 23.6 seconds and setting
another Championship Best Performance (CBP).
Graeme
said this week… “I was really pleased with the
performances and all the hard winter training sessions are
now starting to pay dividends. The aim is to improve over
the next six weeks with runs at the Scottish then British
Masters Championships ready to run as well as I can at the
World Masters Championships in Italy.”

Hailsham
& Eastbourne join force for Masters on Track
Hailsham Harriers and
Eastbourne Rovers joined forces as the first of the Sussex
Masters Track and Field League match of the season was held
at Eastbourne Sports Park.
The
men’s team won and the women’s one came second in very windy
conditions, with the High Jump being called off for safety
reasons. The league this year has been setup to cater for
age groups starting at 35 and then 50 and 60 for both men
and women.
The 2K
walk was the first event with Andy Payne securing victory in
an unusual event for him with 11.42.1. Barry Percy who is
normally very good at this missed the start and therefore
had some catching up to do. Next, for the women was the
shot putt with ‘tea lady’ Val Moore and Liz Brandon both
coming second in their age groups. For the men it was the
Hammer with Brian Slaughter and Colin Morgan. Colin was
making a come back and did so in style by winning the M50
event.
The 100M
had the benefit of a following wind and Graeme Hogg making
his debut for the team secured a solid victory in 11.6.
Brian Slaughter ran the ‘B’ race for second in 12.6. Barry
Percy won in style in the M60 with 14.6. The women’s races
saw Val Moore again in action with a new pb of 14.3, Jayne
Caplen coming second in her race and Sue Keen winning hers.
The hammer saw victory and second for Angela Morgan and Liz
Brandon. Because of the weather, times were meaningless in
the 400M races. However, Jane Barlow looked very strong as
she dominated her race for victory. Mike Ovens and Brian
Slaughter teamed up with Mike winning his race and Brian
second in his. The javelin was a victory for Bob Sumison in
his age group and Ian Turner notched up another win in the
triple jump. The 1500M were the toughest events of the night
with Andy Fessey, Andy Payne, Roberto Proietti and Julie
Chicken all scoring well. The match finished with both the
men’s and women’s relay teams coming second.
The
league now moves to Hastings for the next fixture at the end
of the month.
