Under 11's Win Trophy with 74 Points

On a very windy and cold Wednesday in the first week of July Eastbourne Rovers Athletics Club held their annual Under 11s athletics meeting at Eastbourne Sports Park against Brighton, Hastings and Lewes AC. This event is sponsored by Eastbourne and Country Taxis with medals given to the winners and a trophy for the winning club.

The evening started with the High Jump which was difficult as the wind kept blowing the bar off but the children did very well in the conditions with some good performances from Gabriella Howell in 3rd place with a jump of 1m and Madeleine Chapman 0.90m in their first competition. For the boys Pete Roddis took 1st place with a jump of 1m15 which equalled the club record and Thomas Barrett with 0.98m. The first track event of the evening was the 600m with a good run by Tyler Capon 2.07.2 to give him 3rd place and a good performance from Pete Roddis 2.18.1, Emelia Boyland 2.30.6 and Bethany Edwards 2.31.3. There was some good performances by Troy McCaffrey 12.3 and Connor Goodey 12.2 in the 75m and for the girls Eden Moore got 2nd place with a time of 11.6 and Charlotte Henderson 12.7. In the 150m Thomas Barrett ran 24.5 and Michael Roddis 25.1, for the girls in 2nd place Charlotte Henderson with 25.2 and in 3rd Place Gabriella Howell with 25.3. In the boys Long Jump Connor Goodey jumped a very good 3m49 and Troy McCaffrey 3m 28. In the girls Long Jump Eden Moore took 1st place with a jump of 3m64 and Karley Pierre took 2nd place with 3m16. The last field event was the Turbo Javelin and Tyler Capon came first with a very good throw of 19m72, with Charlie Mackay in 3rd place with a throw of 14m58. Emelia Boyland took first place for the girls with a throw of 12m42  and little 8 year old Abbie Russell threw a very good 10m20. The final events of the night was the 4x100m relay always an exciting event with the Eastbourne girls team coming in second and the Eastbourne boys team after an unfortunate last leg baton change over came in 4th place.

After all the points had been added up Eastbourne came first with 74 points, second was Lewes with 67 points, third Hastings with 62 points and in forth place Brighton with 55 points.

Even though the conditions were not ideal the children and spectators had a very enjoyable evening with good performances from all the competitors and for some of these children it was their first athletics competition. The trophy was presented to a very excited Eastbourne team by Barry Morris

Sarah Delights for Sussex

Several Eastbourne Rovers athletes were in action for Sussex at the weekend at cophall stadium for the South East Schools Combined Events Championships.  The competing Counties were Berks, Hants, Herts, Kent, London, Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex.  The winning team and the top six athletes in each age group qualify for the English schools championships being held in Exeter on 15/16 September. The Eastbourne contingent was Sarah Moore, Alice Essam, Jono Ketley, Ellie Lambert and Laura Davies.  Eastbourne were therefore providing no fewer than five of the eighteen strong Sussex team.

It was in the Intermediate girls (U17) that the biggest success was achieved with Sarah Moore and Alice Essam wearing their Sussex vest with pride.  Conditions were very variable with the wind speed-readings changing between -2.2 M/s and back to +1.1 M/s not ideal for the first event of the hurdles.  In heat one Sarah got her first points on the score sheet with a solid 13.1. This is one of a few events that Alice has an edge over Sarah but her heat was different as she was along side her great rival Bella Hailstone.  Alice had a great start and was going very well but the conditions were not good as her technique suffered over the last two hurdles as she recorded 13.8.  Next they had High Jump and Alice looked good in warm up despite the disappointment of the hurdles. She went on to jump very close to her best.  Sarah was in the other pool of competitors as she recorded a season’s best of 1.59, just missing the 1.62.  The shot was a very solid 9.02 for Sarah for the second best performance in this event.  Alice was holding herself together as she was close to her best.  The last event for day one was the 200M where again this should be a strong event for Alice.  There was again a minus wind reading and rain as she recorded a 27.8 in her heat.  However Sarah in her heat recorded a pb of 27.1.  At the end of day one Sarah was now in a strong fourth position and Alice in 18th out of the 25 competitors.  Day two starts with the long jump and again more rain, but despite this they both jumped 4.95 and 4.86 respectfully, below what they would have liked but in the conditions solid performances.  The Javelin was a day when officials were being hard on what constituted a valid throw.  Sarah Managed to record a pb first throw but her next two which were further were judged to be no-throws.  Alice had a was scare as her first two were judged as no throws and had to play safe with her third and final one.  However it was still a pb.  Sarah had now moved up in to the third position by winning the javelin.  The 800 is a great test at the end of a two day competition and the girls were drawn into different heats.  Alice was first and she was sensible to not go with the initial leader who when through the first 200 in 29 seconds, however Alice when through in 32 to stay in touch and with 200 to go found that extra energy to finish in a very good time of 2.40.5.  Sarah was in the last heat as medals and honour was on the line.  This has not been a strong event for her in the past but is getting better.  She started right on target as she past through the 400M point and bell in 75 seconds and finished in a solid 2.43.4 to claim the overall forth position in the competition and that place in the All England final in September.  Her points total of 4089 was an improvement of over 500 points and currently ranks her in the country’s top ten for this ‘all-rounder’ event.

Meanwhile in the Junior boys event (U15) Jono Ketley who is at the bottom end of the age group was gaining valuable experience in the pentathlon by finishing 21st with 1867 points to help the Sussex team into 3rd position. On the Sunday it was the Junior girls turn to compete in a pentathlon where Eastbourne had Ellie Lambert and Laura Davies.  Despite there inexperience at this level they did the team and themselves proud by finishing 13th and 18th to help the Sussex team into third position.

Brian Slaughter who helps to co-ordinate and coach Combined Events at the club said “It is bad enough competing in one event in adverse weather conditions but when they have to compete, stay dry, warm and at there best when conditions are not ideal shall we say, then this is a true test of both mental and physical amplitude over two days and seven events”.

The next big combined event competition will be the Southern Championship to be held in early August where they will all be hoping for better weather conditions so they can achieve move good performances.

England U-17 Combined Event Championships - Manchester 2007

Eastbourne Rovers athlete Sarah Moore competed at the Manchester Sportcity indoor stadium for National Under 17 Combined Event Pentathlon championships. She had entered this competition before Christmas as a result of her recent multi-event training over the winter but unfortunately had an injury to her calf which has been treated in the last few weeks. This meant that she was unable to train on either long jump or her favourite event high jump. This made her decision as to whether to compete in Manchester and risk summer injury really hard - but last week she decided together with her physio she would go ahead. Sarah had taken part in the South of England pentathlon, held at Lee Valley at the beginning of January and was delighted with finishing in 5th position, gaining her a new pb of 2924 points in this combined event. She now wanted to desperately beat her new target of 3000 points in Manchester.

She started the competition with a great boost in the 60m hurdles and won heat six with a new personal best time of 9.79. This put her in 18th position out of 37 national athletes. Next was high jump, normally her strongest event. Sarah was naturally nervous as she had only trained once for this in the last few weeks due to her injury. She started at a lower height for her of 1.44 and cleared it first time. She then focused well and continued the next two jumps, 1.47 and 1.50. She put her parents and grandparents who were there to support her through a very tense next few minutes as she knocked 1.53 off in the next two attempts. Somehow, she concentrated on the job in hand and made a great effort and cleared 1.53 on the last attempt! Then she jumped 1.56 first time, which meant she had finished 8th - a great result. She watched the end of the high jump competition with the winning jump of 1.65 going to an athlete from Edinburgh. Sarah's pb is 1.62, so this was hard for her to watch! After 2 events, she had pulled herself up into 12th position with 1441 points.

The next event was shot which she has been working on really hard with coach, Brian Slaughter. She was looking forward to this and came 3rd overall with another new personal best of 9.22m. The long jump was next and she knew she could not push herself 100% but was very pleased with a jump of 4.96m, ending in 7th place. Going into the 800m, Sarah was lifted by discovering she now was in 5th place overall but at the moment 800m is not her strong event, so after speaking to her coach on her mobile phone, she prepared to complete the last event in 2.43 min which would mean she would then achieve her magic 3000 points. She was very quiet and focused as she prepared and the top 7 athletes would run in the last of 5 heats, so it was a long wait. Sarah ran a fantastic race considering all the problems she has had recently and with one lap to go, she glanced at the clock which said 2 mins exactly. She had to complete the dreaded last lap in under 43 seconds. With her family cheering her on, somehow she made it round and had to wait 15minutes for the results to find out her official time .. of 2.43.04.

The day ended on a real high, after all the uncertainty and worry of her injury and the competition generally as a result she had come 6th overall with 3006 points. A long journey back then followed with many phone calls and Sarah finally getting home at 12.30 feeling she had really put in 100% effort. This will now boost her to go on into this her last year at Under 17 and hopefully she continue to achieve new personal bests as she continues to get back to full fitness. Her next competitions will be league matches for the club before the Individual county championships.  It was wonderful to see her enjoy the whole experience and to do so well after all the effort she and her coaches have put in to her athletics.
